Although iron garden furniture can be incredibly beautiful and elegant, it is not uncommon for it to get dirty throughout the year. Thus it is important to have an idea as to how to clean it.
As with any outdoor furniture, iron patio furniture does require a bit of cleaning throughout the year. While cleaning is never a fun process, it does not take long to clean iron lawn furniture, particularly wrought iron. In fact, the process itself is very short, and the end result will make you incredibly happy that you did the cleaning. What’s even better is that the materials that you will need to clean your furniture are most likely already in your household, making it a very cheap task to be done.
With that being said, you should make sure that you have a variety of common materials. Particularly, you will need a sponge, a five-gallon bucket, and dishwashing detergent for the obvious reason of scrubbing. You should also have a nylon scrubber, towels, some fine-grit sandpaper, and lastly, some touch-up paint for wrought iron. If by any chance you do not have all of these materials, they are fairly inexpensive, and can probably be found in your local hardware or department store. Once you’ve amassed the materials, it is time to do the cleaning.
The first step in cleaning wrought iron garden furniture is to mix one full tablespoon of dishwashing detergent in the five gallon bucket. The five-gallon bucket should be full of warm water. Once you have mixed the dishwashing detergent thoroughly, you should move any indoor wrought iron furniture outdoors on a steady surface. You should also move any garden or lawn furniture from the grass to the same steady surface. You must have the furniture on a steady surface to ensure optimal cleaning.
The next step that you should take is to remove any fabric cushions from the furniture. You do not want to damage the fabric in the cleaning process, so it is necessary that these cushions are removed for the time being. Take the sponge that you have gathered, and wet it in the five-gallon bucket. Scrub the furniture using the sponge, and use a nylon scrubber to remove any residue that may have gathered throughout the year, such as bird dung or food particles.
There are times with dirt, dust, and more can get stuck in the deep crevices of the iron garden furniture. If this is the case, do not fret, as you can use a toothbrush or small bottle brush to do this cleaning. Just remember never to use the toothbrush on your own teeth after this task. Make sure that you wet the brush with a bit of warm water, and then add a tiny drop of detergent. Rinse and reapply if the brush gets a bit dirty during the process.
Once you done a bit of scrubbing, and the furniture looks clean, you should should rinse the furniture with a garden hose. Dry the wrought iron garden furniture as soon as possible in order to prevent any rust from forming. Don’t forget to dry the hard to reach places as well.
